Lucy Vodden | Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds | julian lennon

Beatles’ “Lucy” rekindles friendship with Julian Lennon

Lucy Vodden is the woman who inspired the popular Beatles’ song “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”, she is on the news after rediscovering friendship with John’s Lennon son Julian Lennon.

More than 40 years after their pre-school friendship sparked the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s classic “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” the real-life Lucy and Julian Lennon, the first son of Beatle John Lennon, have rediscovered their friendship.

The younger Lennon, upon learning that Lucy Vodden was chronically ill with lupus, took the first step, according to an Associated Press story picked up by USA Today this week.

“Julian got in touch with me out of the blue, when he heard how ill I was, and he said he wanted to do something for me,” Vodden, 46, (above) told the AP.

Lennon, who now lives in France, sent Vodden flowers and vouchers for a local gardening center — Vodden says gardening is one of the few leisure activities she is still able to do.

When it was released in 1967, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was banned by the BBC, which surmised that its psychadelic imagery and LSD acronym were a reference to the Beatles’ drug use at the time.

But John Lennon long insisted that the inspiration came from a drawing that Julian brought home one day. When he asked his son what the drawing portrayed, Julian responded that it was Lucy in the sky with diamonds, referring to his young classmate.

Vodden said she didn’t particularly like the song, and kept her association with the famous tune quiet from friends while she was growing up.

But she seems to have come to terms with it — and certainly with the friendship it celebrates
